FrEQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

How many dogs can I bring with me to Dog Camp?
Each human camper is allowed to bring up to 3 dogs. This is a time of bonding, learning, and new adventures for you and your dog(s). Spreading yourself too thing will rob you and your dogs’ opportunity to really immerse yourselves and get the benefits you deserve.

How many other campers will be at Wild Blue Dog Camp?
We keep our camp a reasonable size by limiting the number of camper applications we accept. Unfortunately, that means we do sell out, but it is the only way to make sure that all attending campers and their dogs can fully enjoy their camp experience. Our September camp will have a maximum of 100 campers. We have a very high staff to camper ratio, so small class groups and plenty of space (33 acres) plus miles of hiking trails, streams and Lake Tahoe make this a doggie wonderland.

How far is the Beach Retreat and Lodge from the 4H Facility?
Approximately a 10 minute drive.

Is my dog too young to attend Dog Camp?
Young dogs thrive at Dog Camp. It is a great opportunity for them to meet lots of dog friendly people, a wide variety of dog breeds in all shapes and sizes, to get some expert training from exceptional instructors, and to get lots of socialization. It is also a time of bonding for you and your dog, a chance to develop a solid, happy, relationship to last a lifetime.

Is my dog too old for Dog Camp?
No! You can be as active or take things as easy as you like, and so can your dog! Our hikes offer a variety of levels for every ability. We also offer classes that dogs of all ages and ability levels can participate in, such as: scent work, games, tricks, rally, activities to enrich your senior dogs life, and much more. We have beautiful lawns, a private beach, and shady pine trees to rest beneath.

My dog hasn't had much training, will my dog fit in?
Yes! This is an ideal place to bring your dog to continue his training and to build a strong foundation for the future. Wild Blue Dog Camp has expert trainers to help your dog become the happy, well trained canine citizen they deserve to be. After all, a well trained dog is welcome more places, has more opportunities for fun, and is happier, and so are you! However, if your dog is aggressive toward other dogs or people, then this is not the place for them.

My dog is not reliable off-leash will he be safe?
Yes, your dog will be safe because you will always be in control of them, either on or off-leash. If your dog does not have good recall we will work on teaching them, as well as teaching good canine etiquette (so they learn how to make good canine and human friends) and they will be on leash until they have proven themselves to be confident, responsive, and self-controlled.

Is this camp like a doggie daycare?
No! This is an interactive experience for you and your dog. You will be a team and participating in activities together.

Why do you ask us to bring a crate or an x-pen? I will have a leash for my dog, isn't that enough?
A crate or an x-pen will give your dog a safe place of their own to rest between activities. Camp can be exhausting and having a nice, cozy spot that makes your dog feel safe and relaxed will make a very real difference for them. They can still enjoy the breeze and watch the other dogs-maybe drift off for a nap, but still remain part of the scene. Many people like leaving a blanket or bed in their cars because their dog is familiar with their "portable crate" and that is a good option as long as there is plenty of shade and temperatures are cool. However, temperatures in September can be in the high 80's during the day and the shade shifts as the sun moves so it can be very unsafe for your dog. Also, we can not have dogs tied up in the picnic areas when food is being served (tripping over a dog while trying to balance a full plate of food is no fun).

If you do not see an Activity or Class that you are interested in listed here, please send us an email with your requests. (If we receive enough interest in an activity not listed here, we will make an attempt to add it to our program.)

Beach retreat and lodge

tahoe beach retreat and lodge

Having recently completed a massive multi-million dollar renovation and complete guest room remodeling, the Beach Retreat and Lodge actively wants your dog as a guest. They have been the hotel “home” for the Wild Blue Dog Pack for 4 years and are the only lakefront hotel in South Lake Tahoe with a dog friendly beach. Most rooms are ground floor, making it easy and convenient to walk your dog in their extensive gardens or along the beach. Cozy beds, heating and air-conditioning, mini refrigerator, in room coffee maker, your own bathroom, shower, and blow dryer. The hotel also has a pool, jacuzzi, business center and two restaurants. Every amenity available to make your vacation with your dog perfect and easy. After long days filled with play a hot shower and a comfortable bed are so absolutely wonderful you will think you are in Dog Heaven.

[You can have your own private room, or find a roommate and share a room.We will not be assigning roommates at the hotel. If you are coming to dog camp with a friend and want to share a room with them, there is a place on the application form to fill in their name.]

The 4H CAMPSITE CABINS

$2,000 PER CAMPER

The 4H Campgrounds are an incredibly beautiful 33 acre, entirely fenced facility full of pine trees, aspen groves, rolling lawns, a private beach and rustic cabins. Primarily used for children’s camps, the 4H literally “goes to the dogs” for Wild Blue Dog Camp. The cabins are clean, but very “no frills.” Much like regular campsites and State Parks the toilets and showers are in a separate building, the beds are twin size and you will be in a communal living environment with other campers and their dogs. If you are traveling to Dog Camp with a friend you will have the opportunity to list them on your registration form and we will assign you a cabin together. Unless you are going to specify your roommate, we will be making cabin assignments. You will also need to provide all of your own bed linens or sleeping bag, towels, and toiletries. Once you park your car, you will have no reason to leave. Enjoy a stress-free vacation with your dog in a beautiful, peaceful location where you can let the outside world fade away and have nothing but fun, fun, fun. For those campers who don’t mind “ruffing it” this is a fantastic option. This lodging will give you a true “camping experience,” and you will wake up each morning and go to sleep each night in paradise.

4H Camp

This is not a good option if you:

  • Have trouble sleeping, are a very light sleeper or keep irregular sleeping hours.

  • Like privacy or are very modest.

  • Your dog has trouble settling down and being quiet around other dogs after hours.

  • Do not enjoy communal bathrooms (such as a State Park).

  • Need to use the restroom several times a night.

  • Experience chronic body pain.

  • Don’t want the hassle of loading everything in and out of a cabin on your own.

oFFSITE

An option for campers who want to make their own lodging arrangements, or do not need lodging accommodations.
You will still get all of your meals, classes and activities included.

$1,900 per camper

Lake Tahoe has many alternate lodging options. There are several campgrounds and RV parks in South Lake Tahoe if you like to RV or tent camp. These campsites sell out EARLY. If you are thinking of bringing your RV make your reservations IMMEDIATELY. Unfortunately one of the closest RV parks to the 4H facility, Zephyr Cove Resort, I do not recommend. They tend to have a “party” atmosphere that can get out of control quickly.

South Lake Tahoe also has numerous motels and hotels that are dog friendly. You should have no trouble finding something through an online search. Websites such as "Hotels.com," "Trivago," or "Kayak" can even help you find rooms at a discount rate. Renting a vacation rental house is also an option but it can be VERY expensive and you need to make your reservations as quickly as possible. September is a very popular month and the more reasonably priced properties book up quickly. Be sure to read the reviews of the properties carefully as not all the accommodations or neighborhoods are equal (for example if you have problems with your knees, a house or condo on a steep hillside with lots of steps would not be a good choice). It can be a great option if you are having your family join you or want to extend your time in South Lake Tahoe and want all the comforts and amenities of home (including a kitchen). I would NOT consider anything in North Lake Tahoe, Emerald Bay, or the western side of Lake Tahoe-it is a long, traffic and road work-filled drive.
